Practices for the week of August 8th

Hello FMESC Coaches and Managers,
Sending you a note since we have more teams out practicing now and have some high temperatures in the forecast over the foreseeable future.  In general, with high temperatures FME will not be cancelling practices globally and will ask coaches to use their discretion at any given time.  If the club decides to cancel all practices due to any reason, we will notify all registered coaches and players by noon each day.

Things to consider when practicing in the heat:

  • Find safe shady areas for players to sit while taking breaks and drinking water
  • Take water breaks at least every 15 minutes (and make it mandatory)
  • Lower activity levels of each exercise
  • Use the time to talk more about tactics and roles
  • Encourage players to bring extra water and/or cold rags
  • Make practice a littler shorter and communicate that with parents
  • Encourage players to wear lighter color clothes
  • Look for safe shady areas to run small sided activities
  • Evaluate the fitness levels of the players you are working with.  Some might practice well in heat and some might struggle.  If at any time a player is having trouble or overheating... you need to put the breaks on and make the decision to stop playing.
  • If you are uncomfortable in any way by practicing in the heat, you can cancel practices.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Thank you,
Ben Draeger
FME Technical Director
